Team Slovenia
Team Slovenia, represented by ZVDS, is comprised of the top 15 players from various clubs affiliated with the Slovenian Water Polo Federation. These clubs include AVK Triglav Kranj, VK Ljubljana Slovan, AVK Branik Maribor, Calcit Water Polo Kamnik, VD Koper 1958, VK Gorica, and PD Maribor.
ZVDS serves as the umbrella organization for water polo clubs in Slovenia, where the sport took root in 1920. Initially introduced for leisure by a student from Vienna, water polo quickly gained popularity, with the first games and competitions occurring in the Ljubljanica river in Ljubljana. Its appeal spread rapidly to other cities, such as Kranj, where the Kokra river became a primary venue. Following World War II, the sport transitioned to indoor pools, with clubs like ŽPK Ljubljana and Triglav Kranj emerging as leaders, alongside Celje and Maribor Branik. ZVDS was established in 1974, with 44 clubs operating during Slovenia’s independence; today, only 8 remain active. Historically, Slovenia has hosted four European championships.
In previous seasons, AVK Triglav Kranj competed in the TOMO tournament in the U14 category among Slovenian clubs. This year, the clubs have collaborated to field a joint team, offering their players the chance to compete against the best of their generation.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that this year marks the first time any club from Slovenia will be competing in the U12 category. Let’s give a warm welcome to both the Slovenian U12 and U14 teams!
